BEFORE YOU GET STARTED:  While you are collecting your urine, please keep urine refrigerated or in a container on ice at all times until you bring it back to our office lab.  Women patients, it would be helpful to purchase a commode hat from a pharmacy to help with the collection of the urine. Most Pharmacies have these commode hats available at a very reasonable cost.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Accuracy is very important so be sure to collect ALL urine during this 24 hour period of time; if you spill the urine or miss even just one urination, please start all over.

STEP 1: Start at the time you get up for the day: _____ AM (write down time)

STEP 2: Flush your first urine when you get up (this is the urine your kidneys made during the night while you were sleeping).

STEP 3: After you discard the first urine of the day, you will start COLLECTING all of your urine for the next 24 hours in the urine container provided to you.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Please remember that you are collecting the urine your kidneys make ALL DAY and ALL NIGHT for a period of 24 hours. This means if you get up during the night of this 24 hour period, that urine HAS to be collected (11 pm, 2 am, 4 am, etc.)

STEP 4: Get up at the same time you got up yesterday _____ AM.

STEP 5: Your first urine on the next morning is your last collection. (This is the urine your kidneys made during the night while you were sleeping in the 24 hour collection period.)

STEP 6: You have completed the 24 hour cycle. You may now STOP collecting your urine and resume your normal activities.

STEP 7: On the same day you complete the urine collection, You (The Patient) will need to bring the urine collection back to our office lab for testing of your kidney function. The patient is required to come because you will need lab work drawn to complete the testing. Office lab hours are 8:30-11 am and 1-3 pm.
